MASTERCLASS IN ACTION | INSTRUCTOR PILOT PRODUCT - SAMPLE SESSION PLAN | by Orjan Pettersen

Updated: Oct 28, 2021

This taster MASTERCLASS IN ACTION is a new pilot product targeted at Krav Maga instructors and schools.

This product is especially aimed at existing instructors and independent self defence schools to help them develop progressive and refreshing session plans for their teaching or to experience different approaches to the didactic of self defence.

It can also be used by experienced practitioners as a blueprint for their own solo or group training.

Each MASTERCLASS IN ACTION provides the teaching and training framework for a two-hour Krav Maga class, highlighting step-by-step how to instruct or train it.

Each technique covered can be found in our MASTERCLASS and MASTERCLASS PRO sections.

We are piloting the MASTERCLASS IN ACTION concept to ascertain interest before deciding if to make it commercially available. The pilot may cover the availability of individual themed session plans, access to a library of session plans or bespoke plans by commission, either for class sessions or larger seminars.

These will be payable as commercial service as it is aimed primarily at Krav Maga school business owners.

IF YOU ARE AN INSTRUCTOR OR SCHOOL INTERESTED IN THIS SERVICE, PLEASE MESSAGE THE KRAV MAGA EDUCATOR VIA WEBSITE, IG OR FB FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

The below is an example of a MASTERCLASS IN ACTION training plan:

SESSION PLAN: WARM-UP • SOFT BREAK-FALL BACKWARDS • DOUBLE FOREARM STRIKE • GROIN KICK • COOL-DOWN

CLASS SCENARIO: Defending being pushed to the floor by landing safely, standing up to deliver a defence against a circular hand attack followed up by a groin kick.

EQUIPMENT: Focus mitt, larger kicking shield.

LOCATION: Can be trained inside and outside, on all surfaces for reality based training.

ATTENDANCE: All session content is created for beginner levers upwards.

SESSION STRUCTURE:

A. Warm up (with relevant preparatory exercises):

A1: Pair of two students. Attacker has focus mitt, pursuing defender in fighting stance who is moving away in camouflage stance (SEARCH: MASTERCLASS FIGHTING STANCE, CAMOUFLAGE STANCE). Attacker presents focus mitt in front of them OR conducts a circular attack against defender’s head with other hand in a controlled speed to support appropriate choice and reaction from defender. Defender either delivers circular open palm hand strike against focus mitt OR double forearm strike against circular attack. (SEARCH: MASTERCLASS DOUBLE FOREARM STRIKE).

A2: Still in pair of two students. Defender is now chasing attacker in fighting stance, always staying on kicking range as attacker randomly presents focus mitt in front of them (centreline of body) for defender to stretch-kick upwards with a straight leg to touch the toes on the downward-facing focus mitt, held at an appropriate height for their flexibility. This is a gentler stretching exercise, not a power-kicking drill.

A3: Class in single group. All duck-walk on floor. On command, fall into soft break-fall backwards from low position (SEARCH: MASTERCLASS SOFT BREAK-FALL BACKWARDS).

A4: Loosen full-body joints by multi-directional circular movements of head, shoulders, elbows, wrists, core, knees and ankles. Stretch legs, glutes and shoulders particularly for this session.

B. SOFT BREAK-FALL BACKWARDS. Demo technique and standing up facing forward. Solo training.

B1: Practice from squat position (as in warm up exercise).

B2: Practice from partial squat position.

B3: Practice from standing position.

B4: In pairs, practice from moving around slowly, with one student gently pushing other student down, before standing up to change roles each time.

C. DOUBLE FOREARM STRIKE. Demo technique. Use large striking shield. In pairs.

C1: From hand striking range, from stationary position, work powerfully and explosively on striking shield held up partially to the side of body at torso height. Train both sides.

C2: Same drill, but attacker is chasing defender who is moving away, before stepping closer, forcing defender to act. Train both sides, but start with shields held low and struck randomly.

C3: Same drill, but no striking shield is required. Conduct drill against actual (slower) circular hand strike against head as trigger to act.

D. SOFT BREAK-FALL BACKWARDS AND DOUBLE FOREARM STRIKE. Demo drill. No equipment needed. In pairs.

D1: From eyes closed position, defender is pushed down and conducts break-fall, standing up, as attacker steps in with a circular hand attacker, defended by a double forearm strike.

E. GROIN KICK. Demo technique. large striking shields nodded, held to protect groin. In pairs. (SEARCH: MASTERCLASS GROIN KICK).

E1: Kick on stationary striking shield, with step in to close distance.

E2: As E1, but shield-holder is always moving backwards, with attacker chasing to continually kick. This is also a power exercise.

F. DOUBLE FOREARM STRIKE and GROIN KICK. Demo drill. In pairs, with striking shield, held to protect groin. Controlled speed and power.

F1: Attacker (with striking shield) pursues defender and when striking with circular hand attacker, defender responds with double forearm strike moving the attacker backwards, setting up a groin kick.

G. SOFT BREAK-FALL BACKWARDS and DOUBLE FOREARM STRIKE and GROIN KICK. Demo drill. In pairs, with striking shield, held to protect groin. Controlled speed and power.

G1: Put everything together. Defender (with eyes closed) is pushed down, conducts soft break-fall, stands up, as attacker is stepping in with circular hand attack which is defended with a double forearm strike and a groin kick before running away (a few meters) where the drill is reset.

H. POWER and DECISION DRILL. Demo drill. In pairs, lined up. One line has striking shields, focus mitts.

H1: Defending line is running explosively on the spot with eyes closed. On commend of the attacking partner, they open eyes and respond. Commands may be, randomly: To fall down and stand up, to follow with: a circular hand attack (respond with double forearm only), a striking shield to protect groin (for groin kicks), a circular hand attack and a striking shield to protect groin (for both double forearm strike and groin kick).

I: COOL-DOWN. Solo exercises. Stretch out legs, lower back and shoulders.
