MASTERCLASS PRO | DOUBLE FRONTAL ELBOW STRIKE • GROIN KICK • DIAGONAL KICK | by Orjan Pettersen

Updated: Jul 22, 2021

MASTERCLASS PRO is a feature which gives you a brief insight into highly effective and natural striking combinations used in Krav Maga self defence.

Scenario: Bursting in preemptively or in response to an approaching attacker (ideal against multiple circular hand strike attacks) to protect your head and deliver a devastating double elbow strike against the face of the aggressor, followed immediately up with a kick to the groin and a (round-house style) diagonal kick to the outside of the leg to take away the aggressor’s footing.

DOUBLE FRONTAL ELBOW STRIKE TO THE FACE

  • Close the distance to the attacker by bursting your upper body forwards (by pushing off with your legs) as you rapidly cement both your hands on the rear part of your head so your elbows point forward in line with your eyes, without any gap between them. Don’t drop your head to keep the pointy elbows as high as possible and to create a small and hard connection point.

  • Aim the strike towards the attacker’s face, but if they are taller than you, a strike against the upper torso is also painful. The more momentum you create with the strike, the more effective the impact will be. Make sure your hands are firmly implanted on your head so there’s no absorption of energy created by your hands moving backwards.

KICK TO THE GROIN

  • Several strikes are now available, dependent on how far you moved the attacker back with your first double elbow strike. This may be further horizontal or angled elbow strikes (if still close - see article picture) or a front kick (if moved far back). The groin kick is available for a medium range (where you can reach the growing by no more than a smaller step and kick), especially as an attacker regaining balance moving backwards will be inclined to widen the gap between their legs for better recovery.

  • With your hands now moved back to in front of you, use your back leg as you land as the kicking leg to optimise your forward momentum, by kicking straight forward towards the groin as you aim to slice the opponent in half from below, connecting with the lower to mid part of your shin (not the ball of the foot or the instep).

  • Land back in line with the base leg.

DIAGONAL KICK TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE LEG

  • If the attacker responds to the groin kick by folding slightly and closing their knees together (natural pain reaction), your next natural kick can be to ‘cut’ their legs in two with a diagonal kick to the exposed outside of the leg, now also bent and ‘ready’ for impact.

  • With the base leg toes moved into the kicking direction (to give more flexibility to your pelvis area), kick with a locked-leg frame with the shin against the outer thigh (c. 5-10cm above knee) to move the opponent’s leg sideways. Dig the shin in on impact for extra pain.

  • Land back in line with the base leg, ready for further action.
