ARTICLE | BE YOUR OWN HERO | by Orjan Pettersen

In an unpredictable world, you need to be your own hero.

And one to those near to you, your family and friends.

Krav Maga* is about combat and self defence training for the real world. Not the dojo. Not just for fitness. Not a sport. Not intended for competition and not restricted by rules except those imposed by domestic self defence law, a Krav Maga’s imperative philosophical mindset is omnipresent; it’s about survival.

Because self defence is a encompassing subject, Krav Maga is also much more than just close quarter combat techniques, tactics and thinking.

It teaches you how to become more situationally aware and how to apply body language and behaviours to reduce incidence of violence. You will also learn conflict management solutions and legal awareness to protect yourself and others. Its teaching also covers criminal psychology, criminology, biomechanics, anatomy and physiology, as well as health, well-being and medical trauma management.

All these competencies are part of a rounded self defence proficiency. Learning self defence with us can grow your mental strength, confidence and sensory application as much as your fighting and fitness abilities.

Krav Maga’s hand-to-hand combat training covers scenarios ranging from personal bullying to active shooter terrorism, through defending street violence, road rage and car hijackings, home invasions, public transport violence, sexual assaults, bar brawls... against single or multiple attackers, armed or unarmed. Krav Maga deals with real life.

There are compelling reasons why this is important as we enter the 2020s.

Firstly, crime involving weapons - especially knives - are rapidly increasing year on year in many countries, especially here in the UK. This threat applies to any gender, any age and across society. No one should feel helpless faced with weapon in the hands of a perpetrator.

Secondly, women and traditional minority groups are become increasingly aware and assertive about their place in society - and rightfully so. This has generated misogynistic or other phobia reactions, including hate crime, from a minority of people. All women and other groups should be able to assert their rights without fear and in knowledge that they can defend themselves beyond words if ever called upon.

Thirdly, we are becoming a more divided society; politically, economically and ethnically. This has resulted in higher general crime and more hate crimes specifically. These types of crimes are historically driven by worsened macroeconomic developments. A resource predator (after your possessions) or a predatory hate-criminal (looking to hurt you because of your race or ethnic background) are both a potential threat to life and limbs. Every citizen - whatever their origin - are entitled to walk in peace and to know how to protect themselves against such criminals.

Find a reputable and competent Krav Maga school and you can have the confidence that you are training in the most effective self defence system in the world, thoughtfully adapted to domestic law and local community needs, and taught by highly qualified, internationally-recognised and award-winning instructors**.

Choose to build a confident mind. Choose to develop a combat-fit body. Choose to be your own hero. Who else can you really trust when the moment comes to call?

*Krav Maga (contact combat) is a military self-defence and fighting system developed for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Israeli security forces. It has since been further evolved for civilian training and spread around the world. Krav Maga is derived from a combination of techniques sourced from Boxing, Wrestling, Aikido, Judo, Karate and other martial arts along with realistic fight training. Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extreme efficiency.
