Effective self defence can simplified around three key areas.
DETECT. BODY LANGUAGE AND SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IS KEY.
This is 90% of self defence. Look confident and alert to avoid being picked as a victim when ‘interviewed’ by a criminal. Avoid the bad neighbourhood, venue, social group, setting or person thats’s inviting trouble. Pay constant attention to what’s happening around you when in public.
DEESCALATE. CONTROLLING EMOTIONS, THINKING AND MOVEMENT IS IMPERATIVE.
This is a further 9% of self defence. Don’t get drawn into a monkey dance. Keep your mind and voice clear, concise and constructive if confronted. Stay several meters away from the aggressor if possible and leave as soon as you possibly can.
DEFEND. PREEMPTIVE, NON-STOP COUNTER VIOLENCE IS THE SOLUTION.
This is the final 1% when no other option is available. After using verbal warnings and trying to move away, you’re cleared legally to strike first, hard and without stopping for as long as it’s necessary, proportionate and reasonable until you can safely escape to call the Police. Learning effective physical self defence such as Krav Maga is really valuable here.
Stay safe. Remember the three D’s.
